The scripts from that parenting coach on Instagram. The strategies the therapist gave you. The tricks from your friend whose kid actually listens the first time. You’ve tried it all. And for a day or two, they worked for you. But then? Right back to square one. The tantrums. The power struggles. The exhaustion. And you’re left wondering: Why does nothing stick? What is going wrong?

But then? Right back to square one.
The tantrums. The power struggles. The exhaustion.

Holly and the Endless Cycle
Holly gripped the steering wheel so tightly that her knuckles turned white. She was sitting in her car, parked outside her house, dreading going inside.
Earlier, she had sat through another meeting with 7-year-old Max’s teacher about how he had lashed out at a classmate, pushed over a chair, and hit another child. The school was concerned. Holly was more than concerned: she was at the end of her rope.
She read the parenting books and followed all the advice. She gave him choices and kept her voice calm.
At times Max seemed to improve… but then he’d go back to normal.
Nothing stuck.
"What am I doing wrong?”
Why More “Tools” Won’t Fix the Problem
Imagine handing a random person a fully stocked toolbox - every high-tech gadget, every tool they could ever need - and then asking them to build a rocking chair. Would they succeed?
No.
Because tools alone don’t build rocking chairs.
Now, imagine giving a master carpenter a simple hammer, saw, and nails. They’d build something incredible - not because of the tools themselves, but because they have the skills to use them effectively. They don’t just follow instructions, they problem-solve. They create.
As parents, we grasp for lifelines: scrolling social media at midnight, desperately searching for answers, signing up for another parenting class, following the school’s advice and begging friends for any tip that might finally work.
But no tool will be effective if we don’t have a deep understanding of how to use it – just like we couldn’t build a rocking chair unless we had the skills, experience, and understanding, no matter what tools we used.
The Beliefs Holding You Back
Sitting in the car that day, Holly realized something:
It wasn’t just Max who needed to change.
She did too.
“There’s no outer change without inner change.”
No matter what new technique she tried, nothing would work unless her whole perspective changed. She couldn’t keep cycling through new strategies, hoping one would magically fix everything. She couldn’t help Max until she genuinely understood him and recognized what was going wrong in their family dynamic.
She had to stop fearing she would fail Max if she did things differently.
She had to stop treating parenting as a search for a perfect blueprint and start seeing it as a relationship that required her to grow alongside her child.
What Actually Sticks
When Holly finally stepped inside that evening, she didn’t reach for another script or tool.
Knowing what had happened that day, instead, she sat down next to Max and simply asked:
"What’s been hard for you today?"
And to her shock, he answered. It was raw, real and honest.
Not because she used a perfect phrase. Not because she followed a step-by-step plan.
But because she stopped fixing and started connecting.
She didn’t try to control his emotions. She didn’t try to force him into compliance.
She just showed up.
And at that moment, they turned a corner.
It wasn’t instant, because real change rarely is.
But it was a beginning.
A break in the cycle.
A sign that something new was possible - for both of them.
If Nothing Is Sticking, Ask Yourself:
👉 Am I trying to parent differently without thinking differently?
👉 Am I collecting tools without learning how to use them?
👉 Am I resisting changing my own patterns?
Effective strategies do work. Powerful tools are helpful.
But only in the hands of a parent who is willing to change and grow so they can use them well.
And that is where your U-Turn happens. ✨
The Real Work of Parenting
The real work of parenting isn’t about getting your child to listen the first time.
It’s not about stopping the tantrums completely.
It’s not even about eliminating all the hard moments.
The real work is about learning to see your child and yourself with fresh eyes.
It’s about shifting from: "How do I stop this behaviour?"
to
"What does my child need from me right now?"
Parenting is about connecting, and when connection comes first, cooperation follows. 🥰

You know the scene: You tell your child it’s time to turn off the tablet, and suddenly, the sky is falling. Tears, screaming, maybe even a full-body flop onto the floor. Your sweet child just giggling at a silly YouTube video is now thrashing around like you’ve taken away their oxygen.
